I wrote this a few years ago, soon after the housing market crash. I knew a lot of folks who lost everything through no fault of their own. I was trying to point out that any of us are only inches away from disaster and it's almost always a sequence of events. The Slide down is always faster than the climb back.

Words and Music by Tom Keating
Long Slide Down
I know what’s wrong and I know what’s right
I know you’re thinking I’ve given up the fight
There’s whiskey in my bottle and smoke in the air
And you’re talking about me like I’m not even here
I had a good job that they sent overseas
It was real good for profits, but not good for me
I think about who has what was mine
And I hope that he’s happy with a buck twenty nine
chorus
But I didn’t find the bottom by myself
It’s been a long slide down, but I’ve had lots of help
No I find the bottom by myself
Bridge
Life can be tough, it can drive you to your knees
Hard times will come to us all
The further you slide, the steeper the climb
When there’s no one to catch you when you fall
I had a nice house that’s now owned by the bank
I signed all those papers, still don’t know who to thank
I only know I got a note in the mail
And I hope all those bankers will all burn in hell
I know that I’ve had a roll in this too
I should have known its too good to be true
I’ll drink my last swallow then set down my cup
Take hold of my bootstraps and pull myself up
chorus
I didn’t find the bottom by myself
It’s a long hard climb but I’ll make it back
Even if I do it by myself.
